YEAR is the annual yearbook showcasing a subjective, abstract, moving scene. The third issue of YEAR is, again, an almanac, a programme, a diary and a lot of glam shit handsome gorgeous terrific “blah blah blah” gathering together more than 85 prospective and retrospective contributions. Theory, poetry and narration mingle with the visual in what unravels, page after page - a landscape full of details and perspectives. On the one hand it is a printed exhibition, on the other a garden hosting an experimental barbecue with dead lipstick and redneck zombies, plus a lake and a few books. Can you smell that? Where does this come from, huh? And discussions behind every bush and column.

It’s not really necessary to number the pages, we think, as it’s just like having a map in each room of your apartment. Nor is it arranged in the order of the twelve months between May 2012 and April 2013, but rather around twelve sections named after Belgian discos. This dancing factory was generated through research led by the DSCTHK collective, which gathered together the historic material, and then formalised it in the twelve inside covers by Überknackig.

In this edition of YEAR, the seasons are introduced with musical notes by Jean-Yves Evrard, mirrored with images of scattered glasses by Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez. Anthea Hamilton painted the sides of the pages: Each book is a piece of the puzzle of a pile of eighteen YEARs.

y11.otf - aka ‘Melody’ - is the first font composed from the first YEAR pages, scanned and processed by Fonzie (thanks to Pierre & Pierre). Its jumping and bumping characters happened to be ideal for poetry and music lyrics, unlike ‘Gentium’ - a typeface for the nation - used elsewhere in the book.

Three editors have completed special sections, unfolding YEAR in an exhibition at Komplot : Île 2 France curated by Yann Chevallier, Black and Vases curated by Sonia Dermience and Alberto García del Castillo and After Howl directed by David Evrard.

Once all the contributions arrived at this surprise party, YEAR’s third anniversary was celebrated on March 1st 2013. We ate the tiger - and a good year strikes again!

YEAR est ce livre annuel qui présente une scène subjective, abstraite et en mouvement. Le troisième numéro est de nouveau un almanach, un programme, un journal et un tas de superbes brolles glams terrifiants de beauté, de violence et d’urgence et de “blah blah blah” rassemblant plus de 85 contributions prospectives et retrospectives. Théorie, poésie et narration se mêlent aux images dans ce qui se dévoile page après page comme un paysage plein de détails et de perspectives. D’un côté c’est une exposition imprimée, de l’autre un jardin avec un barbecue experimental, du rouge à lèvre mort et des zombies de Wallifornie, plus un lac et quelques livres. Vous pouvez sentir cela? D’où ça vient, huh? Et toutes ces discussions derrière les buissons et les colonnes…

Nous nous sommes dit que ce n’était pas nécessaire de numéroter les pages, ce serait comme avoir un plan de son appartement dans chaque chambre. Ce n’est pas non plus arrangé selon une chronologie de mai 2012 à avril 2013, mais autour de 12 sections qui portent les noms de célèbres discothèques belges. Cette usine à danser a été générée par le collectif DSCTHK qui a rassemblé le materiel historique, ensuite mis en forme en 12 pages intérieures par Überknackig.

Dans cette édition de YEAR, les saisons sont introduites par la musique de Jean-Yves Evrard, mise en miroir avec des images de verres cassés de Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez. Anthea Hamilton a peint les côtés des pages faisant de chaque livre une pièce dans un puzzle de 18 YEAR.

y11.otf aka ‘Melody’ est la première typographie composée à partir des premières pages du premier numéro de YEAR, scannées et travaillées par Fonzie (merci Pierre & Pierre). Les lettres en mouvement créent une dynamique pour la poésie et les textes musicaux à la différence de ‘Gentium’ la typographie historique de YEAR.

Trois des éditeurs ont réalisé des sections visibles dans l’exposition YEAR à Komplot : Île 2 France par Yann Chevallier, Black and Vases par Sonia Dermience et Alberto García del Castillo et After Howl par David Evrard.

Toutes les contributions sont arrivées pour la surprise party du 1 mars 2013, troisième anniversaire de YEAR et, ouais, nous avons mangé le tigre!

YEAR is een jaarlijks magazine, nu reeds aan zijn derde editie toe. YEAR toont een subjectieve en abstracte scène volop in beweging. In deze editie speelt YEAR opnieuw met vorm en doet denken aan een almanak, een programma, een dagboek of de vele glamour blablabla pulp – waarin meer dan 85 prospectieve en retrospectieve bijdragen te vinden zijn. Theorie, poëzie en verhaal mengen zich gaandeweg met beeldend materiaal. Met het omslaan van de pagina’s ontrafelt zich een visueel landschap met oog voor detail. YEAR kan beschouwd worden als een boektentoonstelling. Anderen spreken liever van een tuin waarin Johnny en Marina flikflooien in het gras naast een meer tijdens een experimentele barbecue met enkele boeken, enkel om de sfeer op te snuiven… Waar waren we? – aangevuld met verscheidene discussies en columns.

In YEAR zijn pagina’s ongenummerd. Nummers zijn overbodig. In je appartement hangt toch ook geen plattegrond van elke kamer? YEAR is niet-chronologisch. De maanden tussen mei 2012 en april 2013 hoeven geen vermelding. Het magazine werd immers opgedeeld in 12 secties genaamd naar Belgische discotheken: een onderzoek van het collectief DSKTHK die hiervoor historisch referentiemateriaal samenbrachten. Het geheel wordt vormgegeven door Überknackig.

Dit YEAR worden de seizoenen vergezeld van partituren door componist Jean-Yves Evrard. Deze worden gespiegeld aan de beelden vol gebroken glas door Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez. De zijwanden van YEAR werden geschilderd door Anthea Hammilton, achttien per stapel, waar dit exemplaar deel van uitmaakt. Hoera, samen volwassen!

Y11.otf ofte “Melody” is een nieuw lettertype ontworpen voor het magazine (met dank aan Pierre & Pierre). Het springend en botsend karakter ervan geeft een eigen dynamiek aan de poëzie en de muziekteksten. Dit in tegenstelling tot “Gentium” – een nationaal letterontwerp – dat gebruikt werd voor de andere teksten in het boek.

Drie editors stelden afzonderlijke secties samen in YEAR en ontvouwen het magazine in een tentoonstelling in de expositieruimte van Komplot. Yann Chevallier cureerde Ile 2 France. Sonia Dermience en Alberto García Del Castillo zijn de curatoren van Black and Vases en het project After Howl en The Scene kwam tot stand onder artistieke directie van David Evrard.

YEAR vierde op 1 maart 2013 toen alle bijdragen tezamen kwamen zijn derde verjaardag. We ate the tiger and a good YEAR strikes again!
