Barbara DeGenevieve is an interdisciplinary artist who works in photography, video, and performance. The work she does is project-based, and motivated by the uneasy intersection of ethics, sexuality, and political incorrectness. Her work, research and writing are investigations of sexuality, gender, censorship and the politically volatile and arbitrarily dangerous legal blur between art, pornography and obscenity. From 2001 to 2004, with help from several friends, she was the content provider for a queer website they started, ssspread.com, “the prime porn site for hot femmes, studly butches, and lots of gender fuck.” Out of the Woods was shot at Camp Trans, a yearly protest outside the gates of the Michigan Women’s Music Festival, that until recently barred trans women. Out of the Woods was one of the last image sets to appear on ssspread.com.
